Reamping is an essential technique that lets you refine your guitar tone by processing a previously recorded DI (Direct Input) signal through amps and effects. The HX Stomp makes reamping a breeze, thanks to its versatile USB audio capabilities. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to reamp with HX Stomp:
Recording Your DI Signal
Start by connecting your guitar to the HX Stomp and recording a clean, unprocessed signal (DI) into your DAW. You’ll want to capture both the processed and unprocessed tones. To do this, create two tracks: one mono track set to HX Stomp USB 5 (for the DI signal) and one stereo track set to HX Stomp USB 1/2 (for the processed tone). Arm both tracks and record your performance.
Reamp with HX Stomp
After recording, it’s time to reamp the DI signal. There are 3 methods you may want to utilize.
1. Reamp Using HX Stomp Amp Models: To do this, set your DI track’s output to HX Stomp USB 5/6. This routes the dry guitar signal back into the HX Stomp. On the HX Stomp, set the Input block to “USB 5/6” by selecting it in the signal chain. You can now use the internal processing of the HX Stomp to add effects and amp blocks. You will record this signal back in on a separate track using inputs 1/2.
2. Reamping Using an Amp’s DI Out: Be aware that you cannot plug a powered output from your amp into the HX Stomp, as this will damage your equipment. However, if you amp has a line out or even a headphone jack this method is another possibility. First, set your DI track’s output to 3/4 which is the Send on your HX Stomp. Connect this to the input of your amp. Then, take the direct out of your amp back in to the Return / Aux In jacks on your Stomp. Set your Input Block to “USB 5/6” and create a new track to record the incoming signal in your DAW with Inputs 5/6.
3. Reamping Using A Microphone & Amp: If your amp does not have a DI out, you can still record in through your HX Stomp’s Return / Aux In using a microphone. Note that you will need to transform the mic signal to a line or instrument level signal using a transformer adapter like this. Then set your Input Block to “Input Return L/R” instead of “USB 5/6.” Additionally, keep your DAW input track for your reamped signal as 5/6. With this method, you’ll need to find the right volume for your amp since there isn’t a preamp to add volume on the Return / Aux In inputs.
Additional Reamping Options with Helix Native
For faster reamping, consider using the Helix Native plugin. This allows you to apply HX Stomp’s processing power directly to any track in your DAW without the need for routing or real-time re-recording. The format of a plugin also lends itself to use on other instruments like synths, vocals, and even drums.
Reamping with HX Stomp provides a flexible and powerful way to shape your guitar tone, making it easier to achieve professional-sounding results without additional hardware or overly complicated setups.
