A Guide to the AC10, AC15, and the New Hand-Wired Range

If you have spent more than five minutes talking gear with me at Tone Tailors, you already know where I stand on this one. Out of all the incredible amplifiers that come through our shop, from boutique masterpieces to vintage legends, the Vox AC circuit is still my favorite amplifier platform on the planet. For me, it is the benchmark for touch response, dynamic feel, harmonic complexity, and pure musical inspiration.

In this post I want to dig into two of the most popular models Vox has ever built, the Vox AC10 Custom and the legendary Vox AC15, and help you figure out which one belongs in your rig. And because I know someone is going to ask, yes, the new AC15 Hand-Wired is in stock right now too, but more on that in a minute.

A Legacy That Helped Build the British Invasion

To understand why I love these amps so much, you have to understand what they’ve meant to guitar players over the last 60-plus years. Vox didn’t just participate in the British Invasion, they helped create its soundtrack. The unmistakable chime and jangle of a Vox amplifier became the defining sound of bands like The Beatles, and later found its way into the rigs of players such as Brian May, The Edge, Tom Petty, and Mike Campbell.

That’s an incredible legacy for any amplifier platform. But what keeps me coming back to Vox isn’t the history. It’s the way these amps feel when you play them.

It’s All About the Response

The EL84-powered, Class A design responds instantly to your pick attack. Play softly and you’ll get articulate cleans with that signature bell-like sparkle. Dig in and the amp rewards you with rich harmonics, dynamic overdrive, and a midrange character that cuts through a mix without ever feeling harsh. That responsiveness is the reason this circuit has remained relevant while countless trends have come and gone.

As someone who spends far too much time obsessing over pedalboards, I also believe Vox amps are among the best pedal platforms available. Overdrives, delays, reverbs, and modulation effects all seem to shine through a Vox. The clean foundation remains clear, dynamic, and touch-sensitive, no matter what you place in front of it. That’s exactly what you want from a great platform amp.

One of the questions we hear most often at the shop is simple: Should I buy the AC10 or the AC15? The answer depends entirely on how you plan to use it. Let’s take a closer look at both.

The Vox AC10 Custom: My Favorite Grab-and-Go Amp

The AC10 Custom is one of my favorite grab-and-go amplifiers ever made. It’s compact, lightweight, easy to carry, and delivers authentic British tube tone at volumes that work beautifully for home practice, recording sessions, and rehearsals. Don’t let the 10-watt rating fool you, this amp punches well above its weight class.

A custom-voiced 10-inch Celestion VX10 speaker keeps the low end tight and focused, while dual 12AX7 preamp tubes and a pair of EL84 power tubes deliver that unmistakable British breakup. The dedicated Top Boost channel provides shimmering cleans and touch-sensitive grit, while independent Gain and Master Volume controls let you push the preamp into rich overdrive without overwhelming the room. You also get studio-quality digital reverb and a rear-panel external speaker jack, making it easy to connect a larger cabinet when you want a bigger sound. At roughly 27 pounds, it’s the amp I reach for when I want true Vox tone without hauling a full stage rig.

The Vox AC15: A True Stage Icon

The AC15 takes everything that makes the AC10 great and expands on it. With a larger cabinet, a 12-inch Celestion Greenback speaker, increased clean headroom, built-in spring reverb, tremolo, and enough volume for most live situations, it’s easy to see why the AC15 has become one of the most iconic amplifiers in guitar history.

The larger cabinet produces a wider, deeper, and more three-dimensional sound, while the dual-channel layout adds genuine versatility for both stage and studio use. If you’re gigging regularly, recording often, or simply want the fullest expression of classic Vox tone, the AC15 is tough to beat. It’s the amplifier I recommend most often to players looking for one Vox that can truly do it all.

The Holy Grail: The Vox AC15 Hand-Wired, In Stock Now

If you want to go even deeper, the new Vox AC Hand-Wired Range has landed at the shop, and the AC15 Hand-Wired is on the floor and ready to play today. This series was built to chase that elusive vintage AC15 and AC30 magic, the kind of compression and sag that makes old amps feel so alive.

Vox studied mint condition 1960s originals and rebuilt the details that matter. A reimagined power supply recreates the subtle voltage fluctuations responsible for that glorious sag, while taming the ghost notes that plagued older circuits. Custom output transformers deliver the saturation and harmonic shimmer that define the classic voice, and even the cabinet uses the same thinner material as the original AC30s for that famously rich midrange. You also get lush spring reverb, an FX loop to keep your time-based effects crystal clear, a smart speaker out for easy attenuator hookups, and Celestion Alnico Blue speakers in the 15W combo. It is the closest Vox has ever gotten to plugging straight into history, and you can hear it for yourself right now.

Frequently Asked Questions About These Amps

It comes down to how you play. The AC10 Custom is a compact, lightweight 10 watt, one by ten combo that shines for home practice, recording, and rehearsals while still delivering authentic British tube tone. The AC15 is a 15 watt, one by twelve with a Celestion Greenback, more clean headroom, spring reverb, and tremolo, which makes it the better choice for gigging and the fullest expression of classic Vox sound.

They are some of the best pedal platforms around. The Class A, EL84 design keeps your cleans clear and touch sensitive, so transparent overdrives, delays, reverbs, and modulation all sit beautifully on top. The AC15 and the hand-wired models also include an FX loop, which keeps your time based effects crisp instead of muddying a driven amp.

Yes, the AC15 Hand-Wired is in stock at Tone Tailors right now. It was engineered to recreate the compression, sag, and harmonic richness of vintage 1960s AC15s and AC30s, using a redesigned power supply, custom output transformers, period-correct cabinet materials, spring reverb, an FX loop, and Celestion Alnico Blue speakers. Stop in and play it any time.
