Meet the Band

Tim Dougherty

Guitar, Bass

Hi, I’m Tim Dougherty, a guitarist with 50 years playing experience who has joyfully returned to my first profession in semi-retirement just last year: teaching guitar.
I taught 40-50 students a week for 12 years back in the glory days of the 80’s and 90’s, right out of high school, while playing and recording in bands most of my life, for over 40 years! Growing up and doing session work in my dad’s busy recording studio afforded me experiences in music production that few have, from arranging and comping, to getting the right sound and crafting the perfect part.
With my degrees in English and Secondary Education, I worked eight years as an educational writer and 26 years as a high school English teacher, continuing my lifelong passion for learning, and especially, teaching. With extensive knowledge of music theory, I can demystify music’s secrets for you, helping you to develop your ears and chops along the way, to learn what YOU want to learn, guided expertly down your own judgement-free personal path, not a “one-size fits all” curriculum.
You do NOT need to read standard notation to learn with me; you only need the desire to understand the role of your instrument in music and the time spent practicing and applying what you learn. My specialties are improvisation and composition, and I love the phrasing and sensibility of the blues, the guitar-hero tone of 80’s rock, Nashville-style right hand hybrid picking, and sophisticated uptown harmonies. I look forward to helping you on your way to your own musical goals!
Thanks for taking the time to get to know me a bit.
