Taylor Gold Label Collection: Taylor’s “Old Soul” Era Has Officially Arrived
If you think you already know the “Taylor sound,” it’s time to forget everything for a second. The new Taylor Gold Label Collection is a full-on pivot toward warmth, woodiness, and vintage-inspired tone—without sacrificing the modern playability Taylor is famous for. These guitars feel like a broken-in boutique instrument the moment you pull them out of the case. Taylor calls it an “Old Soul” voice, and honestly… they nailed it.
This collection blends heritage aesthetics with some seriously clever engineering. It’s not just a cosmetic refresh. The Gold Label models are built around three core innovations: a new take on V-Class bracing that emphasizes midrange richness, a revolutionary adjustable neck joint, and a shift to third-party electronics from LR Baggs for a more natural, analog plug-and-play tone. Add in vintage visual cues like crest inlays, a modified script logo headstock, and a deluxe British Cocoa case, and you’ve got something that feels equal parts classic and cutting-edge.
What Makes a Gold Label a Gold Label?
Fanned V-Class Bracing
This isn’t standard V-Class. The “fanned” pattern gives the top more flexibility at the lower bout, adding warmth and sonic depth while keeping the surgical intonation and sustain V-Class is known for. The result is a richer midrange and a more vintage-leaning voice that still tracks perfectly up the neck.
Action Control Neck™
This is the real mic-drop feature. Instead of a traditional neck reset, the Gold Label models use a patented long-tenon neck joint that extends deeper into the body for better resonance and sustain. Inside the soundhole is a single bolt that lets you adjust your string height (action) in seconds—no strings off, no neck reset, no drama. Low and fast for fingerstyle? High and punchy for bluegrass? Done.
“Old Soul” Aesthetics
From the crest fretboard inlays to the sleeker headstock shape and script Taylor logo, these guitars lean into a minimalist, early-20th-century vibe. The firestripe pickguard, rosewood bridge, and high-gloss finish complete the boutique look.
LR Baggs Electronics
Most Gold Label models ditch Taylor’s Expression System 2 in favor of LR Baggs systems like the Element VTC or Anthem SL. These are widely loved for their natural, warm, and reliable live sound—perfect for players who want a no-nonsense acoustic tone when they plug in.
The Lineup
Taylor Gold Label 514e – Super Auditorium
This is the flagship and the debut of Taylor’s brand-new Super Auditorium body shape.
Compared to a standard Grand Auditorium, the Super Auditorium is longer, wider at the lower bout, and deeper, giving it more internal air volume. It’s strictly non-cutaway, maximizing soundboard vibration and acoustic output.
- Top: Torrefied Sitka Spruce
- Back & Sides: Solid Neo-Tropical Mahogany
- Bracing: Fanned V-Class
- Electronics: LR Baggs Element VTC
The torrefaction process “roasts” the spruce top to mimic aged wood, giving it a dry, responsive, instantly vintage character. Paired with mahogany, the 514e delivers a focused, woody midrange with more bloom and bass than a standard GA. It has that mahogany punch, but with a low-end “lung capacity” that feels closer to a dreadnought—without losing the tighter waist and balance of an auditorium shape. If you’re a fingerstyle player who wants more oomph or a flatpicker who wants clarity without mud, this guitar is dangerously good.
